The government assured that the development of the Malampaya Phase 4 (MP4) project will not be affected by tensions in the West Philippine Sea, where competing territorial claims persist.
Undersecretary Claire Castro acknowledged that the Malampaya project is located offshore in an area being contested, particularly by China.
She, however, emphasized that the ongoing dispute will not disrupt operations or development activities in the gas field.
“Yung agawan ng countries, hindi maaapektuhan ang Malampaya Phase 4 (MP4) because it is well-guarded by our coastguards,” Castro said.
She added that the Philippines has established its presence in the area to secure the project and ensure its continued progress.
“We have established our base… boundary there,” she said, underscoring the government’s efforts to protect its energy assets.
Castro’s statement comes as the government pushes forward with MP4, which is expected to boost the country’s energy supply in the coming years.
