In a stunning departure from half a decade of tradition, Spain’s Guillem Pascual and Diandra-Aniela Illes claimed the gold medal at the 2026 WDSF GrandSlam Latin Final at the Empress Ballroom of Winter Gardens, Blackpool, United Kingdom last March 29, Tuesday night.
The victory marks the first time since 2021 that a couple other than the Chinese powerhouse duo, Yan Bangbang and Du Yujun, has stood atop the podium at this prestigious event.
This victory marked the end of a legendary five-year dynasty held by China’s Yan Bangbang and Du Yujun, who had remained undefeated on this stage since 2021.
The competition began with an intense group Samba where all six finalists showcased complex rhythms under the gilded chandeliers of the Winter Gardens.
Spain’s momentum surged during the solo Cha-Cha-Cha when they delivered a high-octane routine that earned a massive 38.9, the highest score of the evening.
China responded with their trademark clinical precision, executing flawless lock steps and technical turns that kept the gold within reach until the very end.
The dramatic Paso Doble saw a fierce face-off between the two powerhouses, with the Spanish “Matadors” leaning into raw passion against the disciplined lines of the defending champions.
During the sensual Rumba solo, the Spanish pair enchanted the judges with a magical connection and risky counterbalance sequences that felt alive and spontaneous.
The final group Jive brought the audience to their feet as the dancers performed a blur of high-speed kicks and flicks accompanied by the iconic Empress Orchestra.
When the official scores were tallied, the announcement confirmed that the long-standing Chinese monopoly had finally been broken by the vibrant energy of the Spanish challengers.
Guillem Pascual and Diandra-Aniela Illes stood atop the podium to receive their medals, signaling a new era for the sport of International Latin dance.
